Are shopping totes really better for the environment than brown paper or plastic bags?

With all the craze of celebrities using shopping totes and retail clothing stores that supply them, are shopping totes better for the environment? I've looked at these "This is not a plastic bag" totes and I wonder "Aren't these too made of non-environment friendly materials? If say, one of these shopping totes lasts me a year, how much damage does making this bag do to the environment, versus the damage a year's worth of plastic bags from the grocery store do to the environment?|||Good point. If you recycle your plastic bags, that should be just as good as using a tote, right?|||yes they are|||The plastic bag has to go to the dump and never completely decompose even after you recycle it, the tote made of natural fiber; will redily decompose.|||A good quality "shopping tote" should last you much longer than a year, especially if you repair it in the off chance that it should break. You can also use other multi use bags than just the newly popular totes. Backpacks make good bags for small trips. By using reusable bags for shopping, you also have the option of buying used, making your own out of scrap fabric, or using organic cotton...all of which are better than constant consumption of either paper or plastic single use bags.|||I'm not sure where these "totes" are coming from or how much noxious gas is put in the air during production...

I usually fuse old grocery bags together, sew them up and make my own tote bags... This way I am pretty sure it's better for the environment.|||A good heavy duty cotton tote should last a a long time, if it's only lasting a year it was probably a cheap piece of garbage from China.|||Totes are for a long time use. Brown bags are friendly and are reusable for different new use of paper. Plastic last for ever and barely decay. Best to avoid plastic.|||In the mantra Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, they are listed in that order for a reason. If you use a re-usable bag, you are reducing the amount of disposable bags, as well as reusing the same bag over and over, Then, after you have used your re-usable bag for years and years and it's time has come, you can recycle it. Disposable plastic shopping bags really are horrible and are actually being banned in some parts of the world. Besides the fact that plastic takes millions of years to decompose, the use vast amounts of oil to produce, pollution is created when the bags are made, and the energy it takes to deliver and ship these bags to the stores causes more emissions that contribute to global warming. Also, a large amount of plastic bags become litter, then drift to sea. There, many animals, especially turtles, mistake the bags for jellyfish, eat them and choke and die.

I love my reusable bags and keep them in my car and near the front door so I don't forget to bring them to the store!|||Paper, Plastic, or Canvas??

Paper, Plastic or Canvas??? This is a question we face with every trip to a store but what is the Best choice? It is easy to say that a reusable canvas tote is the best choice but is it really the best choice? Actual carbon-footprints vary depending on the sources of the bags. Recycled plastic bags are showing up in many markets. Most paper bags are post-consumer recycled paper (not usually from "trees" directly.) Canvas tote bags are costly(compared to plastic or paper) and are mostly made in China under questionable working conditions. When we add up the materials(new canvas), the construction(underpaid workers in bad working conditions), add a huge PLASTIC graphic on the side and shipping across the world, then canvas tote bags get very expensive for the environment and for humans.

To be the MOST eco-friendly, just re-use the bags you already have and save the environmental expense of making new tote bags. Double or triple the old plastic bags and double up on paper bags and they will last through a hundred shopping trips. Or, you could re-use a pair of old jeans and make a tote that will last as long as you do.

At the very least look for bags made of re-used materials (Canvas from sails or denim from old jeans maybe) by someone in your neighborhood.

Beware of any eco-friendly ideas that require the purchase of a new item! Every new item including tote bags require a manufacturing process that adds to the over all problem. Right now, being green is a fad that inspires people to buy more, more, more....in the future being green will mean buy less, use less, and use what you have until it is worn out. When you buy stuff you are feeding the FAD...when you actually start re-using what you already have then you are MAKING A DIFFERENCE!

BTW, I got my Free Tote Bag from Yahoo Answers and it arrived in a PLASTIC BAG and has a huge plastic graphic on the side and it is "Made in India"!|||Yes...why? Because plastic comes from trees, and the more plastic we use, the less trees we cut down. And, plastic bags blow freely and get caught in trees and stuff.|||Permaculture Answer:

The Short Answer YES use re-useable tote or any other bags. It is a green issue, not a fashion statement. If you already have any old tote bags, rucksacks etc, no matter what they are made of, that will carry shopping use these. Using what you have is by far the greenest option. Use them to their death, it is even greener. Check your cupboards and use what you have first.

The Reasons Why?: Or The Long Answer

The scale of the use of plastic is a major environmental problem. Plastic production is highly unsustainable, presuming that we are talking about the oil based plastics and not the new bio-starch products. Plastic carrier bags are ephemeral so they are quickly disposed of. The chances are that the bag will end up in landfill after one use.

Plastic Bags: There are a lot of reasons given why people 'like' plastic bags. However, they still never decompose no matter how many times you use them. This is compounded when people tie their rubbish into plastic bags and thousands of other such filled plastic bags are piled on top of each other iin landfill sites. So if you must use plastic, re-use as many times as possible then take them supermarket to be recycled.

Biodegradeable Bags/Bioplastics: Polylactic acid (PLA) a biodegradable polymer derived from lactic acid. These vegetable based bioplastics biodegrades quickly under composting conditions and does not leave toxic residue. However, bioplastic have own environmental impacts caused by manufacturing and disposal of end product. Charges will be levied for plastics and bioplastics as the Government are having to pay landfill penalties. You will be charged for these impacts and taxed but on the plus side biodegradable bags (from potato and corn starches) are a new thriving industry

Paper Bags. Great if singly composted. In land fill can take years for layers to decompose. Still an organic material. But there is cost of production, costs to environment of pulp trees (monocultures, loss of habitat, etc) costs of recycling/disposal. Again you will have to pay for these production costs and disposal costs and taxed.

Recycle the cardboard boxes at the store to carry your groceries home or just pack into the boot of your car without bags and then carry in from the boot.

France is banning plastic bags 2007 others are moving towards it. The most effective is taxing plastic bag use. If we do not take action we will be taxed as the Irish are for using plastic bags. Effective as a decrease of 90% plastic bag use in Ireland.

http://www.voanews.com/english/archive/2鈥?/a>

Whilst cotton bag production is also unsustainable it is generally used many many more times, generally for a number of years. And are not non-biodegradable. People do not tend to tie their other rubbish into a cloth bag to send it to landfill. Cotton bags will compost in any home composter. Therefore a reused bag made of cloth clearly does not have the same detrimental effect on the environment as a reused bag made of plastic (or many). The environmental impact of plastic bag disposal is magnified because of the number of the bags that are used.

Willow is highly sustainable, from willow coppice and returns to the ground without trace. A wicker basket would be the obvious thing, to cut down on this massive use on single-use plastic carrier bags. Willow can be grown on sewage outfall which as we know is an environmental pollutant. There are no ENVIRONMENTAL costs of processing/production of a willow basket. It is a local economy that does not use heat, beat or treat. It could be grown in the supermarket car park dealing with the waste from the toilet block. In Permaculture we call this zoning and edge. It also demonstrates redundancy of function when used in sewage treatment. Willow is highly sustainable, from willow coppice and returns to the ground without trace.

Perhaps the best solution is to LIMIT YOUR CONSUMPTION OF EVERYTHING.

Think about what you are buying first and how the packaging will be disposed of:

Use your local butcher who will wrap in paper.

Buy fruit and vegetables from local growers it supports your local economy. There are usually lots of recycled cardboard boxes at Farmer's markets.

Buy from the local baker wraps in paper.

Buy milk in glass bottles or recyclable plastic.

Avoid pre packed foods and processed foods. The packaging is excessive.

Ensure you recycle metals, plastics, glass and cardboard.

Compost green waste.

There will be hardly anything left to go to landfill.

How do you prepare for your grocery shopping?

-Do you reference a supermarket catalogue?

-Do you look at various retailers鈥?catalogues before shopping to determine where to shop?

-Do you take your catalogues with you when shopping as reference?

-Do you single out catalogue products that are on special?

-Do you collect coupons to redeem in the supermarket?

-What else?|||To save time and money, I keep routines:

1. multiple store shopping to save money but keep quality - buy fresh food at local grocer, buy non-perishable or expensive items in super center and Costco, oriental food at oriental store.

2. No coupon clipping since it's time consuming, and it doesn't save much if you have picky eater (ex. my 4 yrs old son...) Instead, I purchase grocery alternately in two grocery stores with my grocery saving card to get the specific coupons when they compete.

3. I do use catalogues weekly (PDF file). I check the catalogues (grocery store website) for sale items and make shopping list on-line ( http://www.grocerysurf.com ) since it keeps track of my purchase and give me reminders.

4. Things to take with me -

Cellphone (to access my shopping list)

Store saving card

Credit card

kids

Platic bags (store offers discount if you bring your own bags)|||Here are some great tips!

|||I keep a running grocery list. If I run out of something, it gets added to the list. I shop about 4-5 times a week. Every morning I check the list and make another one of things I need that day and cross them off the master list. The other stuff can wait. If there's a sale or if I have coupons that are about to expire, then I'll buy stuff that I don't need that day, but were on the waiting list. Then I make a mini-list on a post-it note on my wallet and head out the door! And I don't impulse shop, I only buy what's on the post-it note.

It really helps to keep food costs down.|||Sometimes I make a list but that's it. I shop at stores that have good meat and produce. Sales arent' really relevant unless I happen to notice something I use alot is on sale.|||As I am currently of the double income no kids variety my grocery shopping is very disorganised. I don鈥檛 go regularly, I don鈥檛 check catalogues and I just grab what I think I might need. As a consequence I often end up with too much of one thing and not enough of another! I don't collect coupons but I probably should because I know I could spend less than I do.

My mother really had it down pat when I was a kid though, she always knew exactly what was on special before we got to the supermarket and still does, normally because she keeps an eye out for catalogues in the mail.

She tends to stick with the one supermarket as it is closest to where she and Dad live. She writes lists, plans all her meals in advance and always has every ingredient to hand when she needs it!|||I generally don't look at the sale papers first. I sit down and go through my cookbooks and plan out the meals for the next two weeks, make a list of items I need, categorize them on my list, search through my coupon organizer, then take off to the store.|||I don't really do any of that, I just go where the wind takes me! And get whatever I think I need!|||#1: usually i walk around the stores.. in ALL the ayle.. (duno how to spell) and see if i nid anything.. if i do i just put it in the trolley..

#2: i just write down wat i want..|||I read the grocery ads in the Sunday paper to see what's on sale.

Then I make a list based on my needs and interesting items on sale.

I flip through my coupon box.

Then I go shopping.

I try not to buy things that I don't need just b/c they are on sale. I wind up not eating it and that makes me mad. I like to consume as little as possible and stick to needs v/s wants.|||I generally go to two different markets, one that does a lot of advertising, where I like their meats and deli better, and another that does not advertise a lot, but has better selection and prices on fresh produce, and most other things.

I go through the one's weekly flyer and see what's on sale, and make a list.

I then plan my weekly menu around those items.

If either store has a great sale on things that are not perishable, but that I use, I try to stock up.

I will only use coupons if they are for things that I normally buy, I won't typically use them just to use them.

The market that does a lot of advertising gives out coupons books that are simply for an amount off total purchase, and I like those.

I don't usually take the flyer with me, to shop, as long as I have made my list!

I hope this helps!!!

How do I become a security guard for a shopping center ?

I was wondering how I become a security guard for a shopping centre.

Like what certificates and qualifications do I need? And where can I get them?

|||What I did: approach an officer I knew and somewhat jokingly ask if they were hiring. The answer was yes.

He told me to go talk to his boss, who interviewed me, and basically hired me shortly after. I underwent a background check, went to the sherriffs to be fingerprinted, got some thingy notorized (About $50 if I remember)

After hiring I got pepper sprayed (mind blowing pain) so I could carry it, got beat on the arms to learn how to defend myself (part of a $150 course I paid for half of) and a bunch of other crap.

I was paid $7.065/hr, minimum wage at the time to walk around the mall with a 10 pound belt in the most uncomfortable boots ever.|||yes

How do I find a list of establishments in shopping centers in Las Vegas?

I need to send a letter out for work. I am looking for a list of all establishments located within certain shopping centers, like Boca Park and the Green Vallet District.|||For a full list, go to this site.

http://www.lasvegasadvisor.com %26gt;"VEGAS INFO" %26gt;Attractions %26gt;Shopping %26gt;click on any shopping center for the web site %26gt;the web sites have a full list of all stores and phone numbers for each..|||Fashion show mall is cool

try the strip|||Yellow Pages on line.|||That would be a LONG list. Shopping here is a major tourist attraction and full fledged sport.

Need to limit the area or the type of shopping.

Boca is a "district" with a lot of strip centers scattered over several blocks.

The Green valley "district" is on the other side of the Valley and has "The District" next to and around green valley resort.

It would help if you gave an indication of where they will be staying.

we have a list of the malls on or near the strip

How much weight can a shopping cart hold?

I found a metal shopping cart at the end of my street My friends and I want to ride around in it (and act like complete idoits) but we don't know how much weight one can take. The bottom seems to be a bit rusty but it appears to be quite stearty. What is the maxumin weight a shopping cart can hold? Could it hold two people?|||all i can say is make sure you're paid up on your life insurance before you start riding that thing out in the street.|||try it and tell us...by the way yall might wanna stay outta traffic

What do you think putting kids inside of the shopping cart?

Not in the kids' seat.

I mean in the shopping cart where you put grocery and other stuff.

I think it's against the manner, but what do you think?|||I personally think its gross. I put my groceries in the cart and someone else is putting their kid and their dirty shoes in there.|||Too easy for them to fall out that way. If they are to big for the seat in front, they need to walk.|||I dont see anything wrong with it..As long as ur not smuching the kid..|||as long as they sit on their butts its fine. I dont let my kids stand up, i never leave them unattended and i waited until they were old enough to listen before i let them sit in the back! I have seen a little one fall out of the back but she was like a year old and i thought that was irresponsible!|||I put my daughter's car seat with her in her seat in the big part, as her car seat's safety instructions specifically said not to put the seat in the front like most parent's I see do.|||It's better than having them running around breaking glass jars of spaghetti sauce open!|||i think that if you have several children under 4 or 5 and there isn't one with several seats, then it is okay but not preferred. otherwise they ought to walk.|||Too easy for them to fall out and crack their heads. I wouldn't.|||I don't have kids but when I do I see no problem with it because it doesn't matter.

To the person who said that you put the groceries in the cart.... um sorry sweetie but there are much grosser things to worry about.

Those carts have been outside others peoples hands have been on that cart.

A kids tennis shoes don't do anything.

Plus what do you have to worry about if your food is covered?|||My daughter goes in the back when it is very crowded or if shes having a bad day. I just went grocery shopping at Walmart and it was insane in there (in the middle of the day!) my 3 year old is sitting in the back where I can see her and keep an eye on her at all times. If its one of those days where she really should have just stayed at home, but couldn't cause I need some food in my house, yup shes in the cart. Easier for everyone in the store. As for "dirty feet" where you put your food, all food comes in containers or can (and should be) be put in bags (veggies/fruit).|||I let my daughter do it all the time. I don't see a problem with it.|||Well I ALWAYS go shopping with my sisters, since we run an orphanage they go shopping with us, the 21 children plues our five. Most of our children walk but the littlest sit inside the seat and in the basket we each have to hold a cart only one cart is used for the food, two carts filled with kids! Normally I would only use the seat but there are so many young children in our home, that you know, to many children to look after. Such busy days I have.|||it is un safe to put kids in the carts they can fall out and crack there heads and carts and tip very easley at times i just don't think its safe

Im a cart pusher at a walmat store i see this all the time|||Actually, they are probably the safest in the cart if they are sitting. Standing there they are probably the worst off.

When going shopping on a budget what price should I buy things?

This year I will be shopping on clearance rack unless I see something not on the clearance rack that I love. So lets say I get $250. I want more shirts than pants. I want maybe two tanks, a saggy hat, and some cool shades. How much should I spend on each. Like how many ____ will you think I can get. Hope you get what I mean.|||My suggestion to you would be to sign up for emails to your favorite stores

stores like Express send emails with special codes that get you an even bigger discount in store.

Look on the back of some old receipts and see if there are any surveys you can do to get some coupons. You can have what ever you want, you just have to know how to get it for the price that you can afford. So ounce you get lucky and find what you want on clearance you can boost your savings and make for example 20% off turn into 40% off easily.

For 250 you can get a lot of stuff, just have to look in the right places. Shirts are ALWAYS on sale EVERYWHERE. Shirts, 15-20 dollars or less is a great deal. pants 30 or less is a great deal. As for accessories, take your *** to urban outfitters and get some 14 dollar sunglasses, bracelets, necklaces, w.e.|||hat $19:

What are the main things to look for when shopping for a digital camera?

I'm looking to buy a few digital cameras, around 4-5. I want to know which digital cameras are good and what are the main things I should be looking for while shopping for a digital camera.|||Well, really you need to know about

- the range of pixels

- brand of lens

- quality

- reliablity

- portability

Hope Sony cameras are doin good:)|||LET ME KNOW WHEN YOU FIND OUT, I AM LOOKING FOR ONE TOO

|||At least a 3x optical zoom

Uses SD memory cards

At least a 6 mp sensor

Easy to navigate through the menu

Uses Li-ion battery (for better charge cycles and longer life)

With those as the basics, then look for a camera with most of the features you want on it, like face recognition, SI, etc.

http://www.dpreview.com|||You have to decide between tiny and regular size, how much zoom, (3X,4X or 5X optical zoom) or super zoom. Fully automatic? 6 to to 8 megapixels is sufficient for almost all point and shooters. Maybe a camera with an image stabilizer for shaky hands. Just some things to consider.|||If you are really on a very tight budget, check out the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ8K which is reviewed at:

http://www.steves-digicams.com/2007_revi鈥?/a>

It's an all-in-one 7.2 megapixel DSLR camera which includes (i) built-in image stabilization; (ii) HDTV quality video [Quicktime] (iii) a 12x zoom [36 - 432mm (35mm equiv.)] "Leica" lense for nature photography; (iv) up to 1.9 inch macro option; (v) up to 3200 ASA; (vi) takes up to 380 pictures per 120 min. battery charge and sells new for $270 at amazon.com.

How do I set up a pay-to-download shopping cart that lets users choose the amount they wish to pay?

I want to insert a simple function on my website that allows users to pay to download pdfs, but allows them to type in how much they want to pay when they check out. What's the simplest %26amp; cheapest way to do this? Are there any shopping carts out there that already come with this, and can be paired with an automatic download-after-paying function?|||Download the free scripts "Easy PayPal Integration" and "Shopping cart" from http://www.web2coders.com

In the paypal function, set the field "amount" to be "text" instead of "hidden" (or disabled)

That will allow users to modify the default amount.

As to download PDF, I suggest you set-up a table in database, where you stroe the temporary session, the product, the price, and the file name. Once the payment is completed, copy your original PDF file to a MD5 name and give a link to that file. That way, the user can download the COPY of the file, without interfering with the original.

What do you think, better shopping deals tomorrow or days before Christmas?

I just wanted to get some opinions. I am trying to decide whether to do the rest of my Christmas shopping tomorrow (last Saturday before Christmas) or if I will find better deals Tuesday or even Wednesday? I will be doing most of my shopping at Toys r Us and Target. Toys R Us seems to have some great deals through tomorrow but do you think that they are going to get better?

I would really appreciate your insight and opinions here! Thanks!|||It's a bit of a gamble. The later you leave it, the better deals you can sometimes get, but of course you run the risk of the gifts you want being sold out!

Amazon had a gift I wanted, then sold out, saying they could not get it again in time for Christmas, but they did get it again - I checked just by chance and I snapped it up quick!

I also find that if you shop online for an item you want, there are some websites with different gifts that you wouldn't have thought of, that are on offer for that day only. And you end up getting the perfect gifts because you were there just at the right moment!|||I would say get your things tommorow, because if you leave it too late there might not be any of what you wanted left, and its not worth the hectic running around trying to find things.

Hope i helped.|||I kept thinking there would be better deals but the stores don't seem to be lowering the prices too much. Online has had much better deals. Check out both. Target doesn't have as much toys as Toys R US.|||Yeah, sometime lucky enough to get last minute deals. What do you think of online grocery shopping?

WebVan, which has since gone out of business, had a great idea with online grocery shopping and grocery deliveries right to your home. Despite the demise of the original company, other companies conduct online grocery shopping, even some of the large grocery chains.

What do you think about online grocery shopping now? Are you aware if it's available in your area? What would make you use it?|||My local store used to offer on-line shopping. I used it at the busiest times of the year (holidays). The selection wasn't as good as going to the store %26amp; someitmes the produce wasn't 100%. However, it was very conveinent. I loved being able to shop in the middle of the night, get my groceries delivered at 4:00 in the morning %26amp; not having to fight crowds. If there was a local on-line grocery store, I would use it at least once a month.|||We have it in Boston.

PEapod by Stop and Shop is a great servce|||all major supermarkets in the uk offer this

i use it

its great, you browse the aisles on line, send in your order

and its delivered when you want it to be

i love it,|||I just wanna talk about my opinon on this.

I personally wouldnt wanna do this becaus ei wouldnt know who works there, would the food spoil, would it taste bad, where does it come from?

Then i thought about older people and how they cant walk to the store everyday as i do,

u think this would be a great idea for disabled people.|||We don't have it where I live, but if I did, I would use it. I could do all my shopping without hauling my 3 year old to the store.|||We have it in our area but I don't like it.|||It's not available in my area and I don't think I would use it even if it was. I'm a little iffy about not being able to see the meat and produce before I get it delivered. At the grocery store I can pick the freshest looking produce there and I'm not sure if I would get quite that quality by letting someone else pick out my groceries for me.

Does anyone know of a good online shopping cart that integrates well with an ordering system?

I currently use 3D Cart for my shopping cart and Order Motion for my order manager. They don't seem to work well together even though they are suppose to. I need a shopping cart that can securely transfer credit card info over to my ordering system so I can set up auto billing and auto shipments to clients. Or just have the shopping cart do this. Does anyone have a suggestion? Thanks for your help.|||There are quite a number of shopping carts that do provide auto-billing and auto-shipments. The one I'm currently using is called InstanteStore.com (http://www.instantestore.com). They offer a pretty robust auto-billing %26amp; auto-shipment option. Don't think they support Order Motion, though.

What should i ask insurance agents when i am shopping for homeowners insurance?

We are trying to buy homeowners insurance b4 hurricane season...we live in fl. but i wanted to know the right answers to ask the agents when i am shopping for quotes. Is there any? what are the basic questions? i want to make sure i'm covered for all the right stuff and i get what i want and need. thanks for all of your help!|||In FL, it's "will you write me" and "who are you going to quote me with".

You want an A RATED CARRIER, with someone like AM Best. There are a buncha new, unrated carriers cropping up, like Cypress, but since they aren't rated at all, you don't even know if they'll be in business the day after a major hurricane.

For the most part, a good agent will ask YOU lots of questions, to be sure that you're insured propertly.

I know a GREAT insurance agent in FL - www.huttinsurance.com I'm not affiliated, but I've brokered stuff through them, and they do a bang up job.|||wind damage

water damage

not sure of any others but sure there are more; wind damage and water damage are two areas you really need to consider because this agencies are use both to omit one and blame the other for not covering you.

Oh yea, ask about current price of items or on passed cost for the item--this will leave you with less money since your items are old so try for current value to replace the item today.

best but ask anything these guys seem like friends but they are out to make money and not really care about insurance holders.|||eventhough its hard to give an accurate quote because of all the different policies and they usually run your social security number to give you the correct price BUT i found these 2 sites where you can compare insurance at http://www.COMPAREusINSURANCE.com and http://www.COMPAREeQUOTES.com that give out the best comparisons for auto insurance, i hope that helps.

What are some tips to make 100 dollars while shopping last?

Im going shopping for clothes as my birthday present, I'll probably have around $100. What are some tips I can think in mind to get as much as I can and make it last?|||What i do is I go to all the stores i love, like hot topic and pacsun, and look at things. If i really want it, ill make a mental record to go back to that place. Once i have been to all the stores i want, I go back and, knowing all the things i want, i can choose what i really want. This technique saves money AND helps you use your time. Also you wont have to carry around bags until the end. But carrying bags is fun sometimes :)|||A good handbag, shoes online shopping store

What would make you use it?|||I've never used it. I know people that have and I haven't heard any complaints. The only thing that troubles me is the personal selection of fruits, veggies, meat and milk. Those are things that I want to be in charge of, not someone else. What looks fresh to one person, may not look fresh to you.|||I've looked at these companies, and they seem to have pretty high prices to cover their delivery costs.

Because of that, I wouldn't touch them. Maybe if I was a shut-in.

Is store-packaged ground turkey left in my shopping bag overnight still safe to eat?

I left a styrofoam container of ground turkey (still sealed in the container from the supermarket) overnight in my shopping bag. It wasn't sitting on the counter, if that makes any difference. After discovering it was still out about 8 hours after I bought it, I immediately put it in the freezer. Does anyone know for sure if this would still be safe to eat? I have been looking online for tips, but can't find anything definitive. I hate to throw it out, but I will if it's too risky to eat. |||If it wasn't on the counter where was it?|||Sorry -- out of the fridge for 8 hours is not safe to eat. Meat left at room temperature for that long will grow a multitude of unsafe bacteria including salmonella. Throw it out - it's worth the $5 bucks to keep yourself from getting sick.

How much money should I bring on a shopping spree?

Me and my friends are going shopping for my friend's birthday. I need to buy new clothes (next month I'm gonna meet my relatives and stay over at my cousins for a month, also all the clothes I have is all worn out/old :/ so i need a new wardrobe) and we're gonna watch a movie + eat at a restaurant.

How much money would you bring? Right now I have $60 saved from my birthday.|||Haha. Every time I go on a shopping spree, I spend whatever I have. The last one, I spent $350. I think $150 would be enough because it's for a birthday party, and you only have $60 now. Try calling someone else that's going to ask how much they're bringing.

Also, bring about $15 for the movies and popcorn or candy and a soda. As for lunch, it depends on where you're going. Red Robin, McDonalds, etc. you should bring $15, or Olive Garden type, you're better off bringing lunch or just order the breadsticks. Yummy :) So bring about $20-$30 if it's one of those.

I hope I helped!

M|||Well, it depends on where you shop. I personally shop at charlotte russe for $30 jeans, hollister and abercrombie/abercrombie and fitch for shirts and tanks, and macy's for some coach shoes. I go on shopping sprees at least every other month and get some jeans and a lot of shirts and maybe a pair of shoes. Nothing less than $300 but not over $400|||It depends on where you shop. If you go to target you can probably get several outfits for $60 where as if you go to a brand name store you might be able to buy one thing..maybe one thing. Don't get hung up on brand names..its a waste of money. Buy things that you like and that are cute..they don't have to have a designer label.|||When i go shopping, i like to have varieties of what to wear, so i bring around $100, but a shopping spree is worth above $350 to be satisfied

5•7•9 is a great store with clothes that are worth $25 but are sold for less thant $10|||you need mor than sixty dollars and it depends on where your going to buy clothes like if you r going to hollister, ae, abrocrombie/fitch- $400+ and department stores- $350, and shoes- maybe $80 and the cost of food about prob $10-$15

all together ~$840|||I would bring at least $100 for the clothes shopping. If you want a whole new wardrobe then I think that is a good amount. I would also bring another $20 for the movie and lunch. How much should you charge to do someones shopping and run there errands?

Would like to know how much to charge someone to do there shopping and run there errands|||$10 per hour, plus gas used if the errands take you more than 10 miles.|||i THINK THAT YOU SHOULD CHARGE 20.00 FOR SHOPPING AND BETWEEN 20.00 AND 30.00 FOR RUNNING ERRANDS.|||It depends on how much it is worth to you. Especially, in today's economy. It may also depend on how long you're out there when you could be doing things that you want to do. I would say a ballpark figure of ten dollars/hour with a minimum of four hours pay. It may not always last that long, but there should be an incentive to put your interests aside and allow the interests of other to come first. Take it from someone whose business is in the business of others. Hope this helps.|||Just figure out what you want per hour and if you use your car and the cost of that. It is hard for us to put a dollar amount on it because there is such a variation in wages in different parts of the country.|||I would charge a minimum of $10.00...plus gas used|||Basic charge should be forty five to fifty dollars plus mileage Good Luck !

When should I start shopping for my baby?

I am 4 weeks and 6 days pregnant. I am so excited. When did you start shopping? When should I start shopping?|||i started after i found out what the sex was|||NO TIME SOON! I am just trying to cope with the morning sickness and fatigue!!|||just save your money love,it's still toooooooooooo early. and keep all your receipts|||I decided to wait until after we find out what it is.|||I didn't start until my second trimester (after I found out what I was having) but the bigger things I just recently bought. Start shopping when you feel it is right, it is loads of fun. =)|||ya find out what your having then you can start all the shopping its fun|||Whenever you want to, just keep in mind the time of year you will be having the baby (fall), what you might get at your baby shower and things like that. But if your itching to go shopping for your baby then go ahead....it's not like the stuff will go bad or you won't use it. Congrats by the way:)|||As far as clothes or decorations ect for the nursery, maybe after you find out the sex.

Things like diapers, formula (if your not breastfeeding), bottles, wipes ....those essentials....start stocking up right away, you'll be shocked at how fast they go.|||i probably made a baby registry right away.. but didnt actually start shopping till i knew the sex of the baby.. if i were you i would sign up on this website... babycenter.com... it taught me alot about the baby growing inside of me... also i used to look alot at maternity clothes... unfortunately there is not a lot to do this early on.|||I started round 28 weeks, We found out the sex at 24 weeks, and created our registry then.|||i did not buy anything other than crib etc . around 6 mos. my family and friends took care of the rest.|||well when i was six months pregnant, i wanted to find out the sex first then my husband and i went shopping, and remodeled a room for her. ...it was a girl...|||First of all Congratulations! I would start to buy some small things once you hit your 2nd trimester at 14 weeks. You could start to even think about nursery themes now, start looking at cribs ( just to get an idea of what you like), travel systems, etc. Don't buy any of the bigger things until you get in to the end of your 2nd trimester to beginning of your 3rd trimester. Make sure you are going to your Doctor to get checked and get your prenatal vitamins!!|||Most people tend to wait to tell people and buy things, etc. until the first trimester is over just because then the chance of miscarriage reduces significantly. Of course that's easier said than done, especially when it's your first and you're so excited. In my first pregnancy, I was pregnant with twins and we went out and bought cribs and my mother-in-law bought us matching outfits, etc. Then at 16 weeks, we lost one of the twins. It was very hard, but the other baby was born without a problem and is now a healthy, happy 1 year old. A lot of people have the attitude that they just tell everyone and buy things right away because if they do happen to miscarry, they would want everyone to know that too. You just never know. Do what you feel in your heart. Good luck and here's to a healthy and happy 9 months! :-)|||get some stuff now like diapers and lotions and stuff liek that

when you know the gender do that too lol have fun|||I would wait until you find out the sex. I am almost 20 weeks and haven't bought anything yet.|||I think that you should wait until you know the sex and at least after the first trimester when almost all dangers of miscarriage have past.|||I started shopping the minute I left the ultrasound place after finding out it was a girl. I couldnt wait!|||I would wait til you get to the second trimester at least so the change of miscarriage drops significantly. You dont want to buy a ton of baby stuff and have a loss. It is very had to deal with when you have all that baby stuff around you. Good luck and be patient, it will go so fast.|||It is natural to be excited and to want to start preparing, but I always caution against starting too soon. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 30% of women miscarry in the first trimester, and this is even more common with a first pregnancy. Even after the first trimester, nothing is guaranteed. With my first pregnancy (twins), we started preparing very early, and then I ended up delivering one stillborn and one live baby at 25 weeks. He lived only 10 days. The hardest thing in the world was to come home from the hospital with no babies and have to deal with all the STUFF we had bought.

I would recommend buying a few small things to satisfy your excitement and desire to buy stuff, but hold off on most things until the 3rd trimester. Good luck and congrats!|||i always start the day i find out. its never 2 early. u can always start on diapers and baby wipes, onesis, socks, neutral color clothing, but one thing all baby's aren't born 2 wear newborn cloths. some babies be 2 big so u may want 2 hold off on any clothing that says newborn until ur 7th month when u know how much ur baby weight. GOOD LUCK!!!!|||anytime you want. you can buy many unisex outfits now and there's plenty of things you can get that don't depend on pink and blue...wooden cribs, bur cloths, bottles, diapers, shoes, toys, formula, strollers, spoons...all kins of things. my advice...every paycheck, go get a pack of diapers and one thing of formula...that way you'll be stocked up and it won't break your bank when the time comes! congrats! and have fun in baby r us|||first of all, congratulations!

you are meant to wait three months before you start buying things for the baby as the first three months are quite sensitive (where you could still lose the baby), i waited til i was three months gone, but it was so hard because i kept seeing so many lovely adorable baby outfits! try making lists of all the things you need and window shop instead?

Are you going to start Christmas shopping early next year?

Every year i say i will but i never do! Next year is going to be the year that i start shopping in July so that there is less of a financial burden at the end of the year.

Do you think it is a good idea to shop early or do you prefer the adrenaline rush from last minute shopping ?|||My parents can never buy things earlier because apparently us kids change our mind about what we want too much! If they bought our presents in July by the time Christmas came around we we'd want something different!|||I think it's a good idea but never do it- I've thought about shopping as early as July but the presents would be out-dated unless they were really nice-then I'd want to give them away too soon. As for the last minute shopping I don;t find it as a rush but a chance to practice patience and understanding by not being in a bad mood in long lines and bumping carts. A positive attitude can be contagious-smile at miserable people and set a good example|||Clear a spot in your closet and commit to it!!!

A few years ago I did start early. So early I started in the after christmas sales. I still do it and shop all year long. The greatest thing is that if I am invited to a birthday party at last minute, no frets...I got something I can dig out! I usually buy one to two gifts a month starting in January. By Turkey Day I am finished except sometimes for one (a name drawing in hubbys family). Trust me, after that first year that I really committed myself to it, I felt like a freer woman. On top of that I saved receipts and realized I saved a ton of money doing it that way.|||No. I usually have one or two gifts to shop for anyways. And its at the end of the year that the things that everyone really want start to show up on the market. So unless someone you know wants something in July... no early shopping next year either. :)|||I think it is nice to get the gifts you know you have to get purchased early. It is just so much easier financially and time-wise. If you spread the costs out throughout the year you won't have to worry when it comes to December.|||i think you should start early because, it is cheaper, and you don't have to rush, the day before christmas.|||Heck yeah! I started early this year! I had all my shopping done before the summer was over. Phew! And it's been so, so nice just relaxing and enjoying the season.|||The earlier I shop, and the less I have to buy, the better. Christmas is OUT OF CONTROL!|||i start buying stuff in july um wright it down and you wont forget

How do you usually go about your Christmas shopping?

I'm just curious. Do you like to ask people exactly what they want and get it for them, or browse around to find something that you think will be perfect? When do you usually begin your shopping and where? Do you do it all at once or a little at a time? Who do you usually buy for and how much do you spend on each gift? Happy Hollidays!|||I start the day after Thanksgiving and do a combination of online and in-store shopping. I make a list of people I have to get gifts for, and get them things both from their lists and things I just know they'll enjoy.

I usually try and finish a week before Christmas b/c close to Christmas I like to buy food to make for parties and Christmas Eve.

For example, here's what I got my best friend this year (we always get each other five things):

-Jewelry (she asked for jewelry so I got her earrings and a necklace)

- A movie called the Fox and the Child (she loves foxes and animal movies)

-World Wildlife Federation Adopt a Fox Program (Again, she loves foxes and it's different)

-A fox ornament (Again with the foxes.)|||For my immediate family I make something, then my whole family buys something for everyone else.|||I don't usually give gifts, so if i do, i make sure i know the person very well. I am thinking of giving them something useful. IT doesn't matter if the gift is sentimental of not. i just buy them something they need. Say, my father loves eating so i am spotting a running watch for i believe the needs it. BTW here is a good review: http://www.runningwatchreviews.com/.

so, i suggest you give something they need not just something that would remind you to them. Remember, you are giving not campaigning.

How do you add shopping basket facilities to a disk?

I produce a website/catalogue on frontpage that I publish to a disk instead of the web and send out to various customers. (I do not have a website) How do I add shopping basket facilities to it so that customers can order from it, then print out final order and either fax to me or email to me? I have searched the internet but it seems that shopping baskets etc are only geared towards websites. Can anyone help?|||If your "site" isn't hosted on a server/computer that can do scripting, you probably won't be able to have a normal shopping basket.

Your best bet would be to put drop down fields on the form with all the products in the list. The user then selects what they want, with the cost being calculated automatically, and then prints the form.

What are some useful tips when going grocery shopping?

We have a family of four and struggling during these economic times. We need some tips on grocery shopping, because when we go we usually get things that last about 2 weeks tops.|||Everyone has great tips, I will just add a couple of things I do.

Get the Sunday paper if only for the coupons and weekly sales ads at the market.

Make a menu for the week %26lt; this doesn't have to be rigid, like Tuesday is this meal etc., you can make whatever is on the menu any day day of the week%26gt; The menu is made up of things I find on sale and things I have on hand. If you have a coupon for something on sale, so much the better.

Also, double duty dinners are a time saver, for instance, on Sunday I plan a big pot of chili, so Tuesday will be chili mac topped with cheese. Robin Miller from food network does a lot of these types of dinners. Also Sandra Lee and Melissa D'Arabian do $10 dinners, both are also on food network.

Always stick to the list. It does take a bit of work, but I look in my freezer and look up recipes using the proteins I have on hand, this also helps you to NOT have to visit the market a second time to pick up what up forgot.|||http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/8031133/most_efficient_way_to_grocery_shop.html

Here is a great article that should help.

|||always make of list before you go and stick to it... most people keep mental note of the things they need and intend to get at the grocery store, and when they get there they impulse buy 10 other things that weren't on their mental note. I have 3 stores that I shop at and I always check the specials for each store online before I set out to grocery shop. I buy the basics at wal-mart because they tend to be cheaper. I buy cereal, eggs, milk, bread, snacks, vegetable, water, cheese, household products like toilet paper, laundry detergent etc... now there is a store called publix here in florida and they have buy 1 get 1 deals every week that come in handy and so does this other store winn-dixie, I don't know where you live but, I know other stores across america offer these same deals, you just have to look for them and I find looking online at the stores web-site to be most helpful.. also there are other changes you could make like in my household for instance my husband goes to work everyday and my 8 yr. old goes to school, and they both take their lunch.. i used to buy those frozen smuckers peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for my son to take to school, but now, I make his pb%26amp;j and instead of buying individual sized chips for his lunch, I buy a big bag of Doritos or whatever and put some in a ziplock bag...I could go on and on about stuff...but the basic thing is to switch to generic brands of practically everything,,, because they are just as good, and cutting down on packaged food... e.g instead of buying pouches of flavored oatmeal, just buy a big container of oatmeal...and so on and so on... i hope i didn't ramble on too much, but anyhow good luck and God bless :)|||I suggest putting the family on the "peimeter diet". Not actually a diet but a grocery shopping plan.

If you ever noticed, all of the good (unprocessed) foods are on the perimeter of the supermarket. You go from Produce, Seafood, Meat, Dairy. Get 90% of your food in these areas of the market. Obviously, cleaning supplies and dried beans/pasta will require a trip down the aisles but if you keep the focus on the perimeter, you will eat better and cheaper.|||First, make sure you have a stocked pantry of essentials

Second, always make a list and always stick to the list

Third, aside from pantry staples, try to shop the perimeter of the store. The middle aisles are where you'll find all of the processed foods and junk food. The perimeter of the store is where you will find fruits and vegetables, whole grains, protein and good dairy like eggs and yogurt.

Fourth, try to keep those who are shopping to a minimum. It is much more challenging to stick to a list and a budget with each additional person who tags along.

Fifth, use coupons only for items that you actually use. If you find a coupon for a brand of bread that you don't use but want to try, go for it, but don't buy food or products that you don't use just because there is a coupon for it.

I hope these tips begin to help!

Happy Shopping!|||First, I think you should check your pantry and see what you lack and what you are willing to buy. Focus, on what you need. I think that instead of getting a carton of ice cream get a gallon of milk.

Second, look at your grocery store and see if they are offering any sales on items that you are interested in buying. Furthermore, you should look in your newspaper to see if there are any coupons.

Make sure you look at what you really need. So make sure you stock up on poultry, dairy, bread. Then, see if you have enough money for some more.

I work at a grocery store and I see that the families that are saving money are the ones that go and buy everything at once. The ones that just buy a little here and there, then come back several times during the week when they realize they forgot something tend to spend more than what they bargained for.|||Some really good answers here. A list is very helpful to us, and we never go shopping when we are hungry. If I leave my son home, I tend to buy less impulse items. (Actually, it's probably when I leave DADDY home that I buy less impulse items). Coupons don't do much for us, because usually the coupons are an incentive for us to buy some convenience item that we wouldn't buy, unless we had a coupon, so to us, it's money lost.

We found a store near us that sells 'discount groceries'. We have a dog, a cat, a bird and squirrels, and the food for the pets is so much cheaper there. The bag might have a rip, mended with tape, but it's still the same food. Iams, Pet science diet, etc. The rest of the items are not expired, but somehow not 'prime' shelf condition. Boxes may be crushed, etc, but the prices are unbelievable. Never buy crushed cans, but who cares if your mac n cheese has a funky corner?

We also planted a garden last year, got tomatos, raspberries, kale, lettuce, corn and peas, all in a space of about 100 square feet. We planted in tiers, and got the most bang for our buck.

Also, if you have the storage room, join one of the big box stores, and buy the things you need the most often in bulk. We bought a food sealer, and my husband buys and seals meat, steamed veggies, cheese, flour, everything he can put in a bag. (He loves his sealer). Just be careful that you don't buy huge amounts of stuff you won't use before it goes bad.

Just a few things that have worked for us-hope it helped.|||don't go hungry

make a list

buy foods on the outside perimeter

always compare prices

if you live more than 20 minutes from a store...bring an ice chest for meats in hot weather..put a couple of ice trays of ice in there.

buy the stores own products to save money...have coupons ready and see if they have a double coupon day...you can get coupons on line for almost every food.

Buy foods that are on the special racks...they are almost out of date...freeze them or cook them right away.

buy larger containers...like a quart of mayo rather than a squeeze bottle with less in it...you pay for the container and convenience.

larger container of yogurt and mix in your own fruit preserves.

large pack of meat and go home and you put them in smaller freezer bags then freeze.

buy cheaper cuts and cook in sauce to tenderize or hit with tenderizer...like instead of a sirloin or rib eye buy a chuck roast...try odd cuts like tripe, tail, tongue and it is good|||I always shop when I'm hungry! Of course I'm always hungry. But then I buy enough for several days and don't shop as often, Don't bring the kids or the spouse. If someone wants a particular food it must be on the list. Buy unprocessed meats, fish, fruits and vegetables and do your own cooking. There are some aisles of the grocery store that I have never been in, like the soda, and chips and snacks aisles.|||don't go grocery while you're hungry, this will lead you to buy more. since you want it to last for 2 weeks buy the biggest size of a product or go wholesale.. it might look expensive but it will last longer...|||Tom had some very good shopping tips. The only thing I can add to his list is to make sure you are NOT hungry when you go. I always eat before I go to the grocery store. You ain't tempted to grab extras that way.|||use coupons for somethings, stock up when things are a bargain, use store brand if possible, buy family pack of hamburger divide into 1lb packages, buy family pack of meat if possible, grow garden|||save money|||First of all, do not take the whole family to the store. Even just two adults can end up spending more as each gets fancy ideas about ways of spicing up the week's menu. One adult should go shopping, alone. Two of you can alternate shopping trips if you want, but only one of you should go at a time.

Next, set a regular shopping day. Try to be realistic about how often you will need to shop. For example, if your family drinks a lot of milk and you only have a small refrigerator, you may need to shop more than once a week. If you don't use any products that would spoil in a week or that can't be frozen, then you can go every two weeks. Longer than that is probably not practical for most people, but if you have a lot of storage space and don't use many perishable items, it may work for you.

Then, get in the habit of keeping a running list of things you need. Don't wait until five minutes before the shopping trip to take out pen and paper and brainstorm for ideas. Instead, keep a list on your refrigerator with a magnet all the time. As you think of things you need, add them to the list. It's especially helpful if the list is arranged in categories based on the layout of the store you usually use. For example, my store goes PRODUCE/DELI, FROZEN, MEAT, FOOD GROCERY, NON-FOOD GROCERY, DAIRY, NON-GROCERY. You can simply write those broad categories on a sheet of paper, or type a template on your computer and print several in advance. If you want something more detailed, see if your store offers a free list or store map.

Try to leave a little flexibility in your list. For example, don't necessarily say "hamburger". Say "meat", so that you'll remember to check the price per pound on the various options available. One week, it may make sense to buy hamburger and make a pot of chili. The next, there may be a sale that makes frozen turkey breasts less expensive. There's nothing like a Sunday dinner with roast turkey on no special occasion whatsoever to keep you from feeling deprived!

Sometime before each shopping trip, you should look at the list and make a mark next to each high-priority item, in case you can't afford to buy it all at once. Also, make sure that between the food on your list and the food in your cupboards, you have ALL the ingredients to make the meals you want to have before the next shopping day. A single extra trip to the store "just to pick up a few things" can tempt you to buy things you don't really need.

Next, set a clear budget, one that you can stick to. In the context of your overall family budget, figure out how much you are willing to spend on groceries, phrased as a certain amount for a given time period (a week, two weeks, however often you want to shop).

Of that amount, set aside about 5-15% for "impulse spending" (more toward 5% if money is especially tight or more toward 15% if you are especially good at grabbing bargains on impulse). It can be helpful to get your grocery money in CASH rather than writing a check or using a debit card. (If money is tight, NEVER put recurrent necessities like food on a credit card! It makes it too easy to overspend.) Pull off the "impulse dollars" before you walk into the store and put them in a different pocket from the main fund. You can use them to buy anything you choose, either on the regular shopping trip or (if you are disciplined enough to stay within the impulse budget) between trips. This can help you to take advantage of great sales on things that aren't on the list and that will not spoil if you "stock up" before you need them. Also, it allows you to buy occasional "surprises" for the family. Without that, it can become a real grind to keep within your list all the time. If you never make an exception until you are feeling frustrated and deprived, eventually, you'll end up splurging and spending way more than you should. Anything you don't spend can be carried over to the next shopping period, allowing occasional bigger treats.

Consider setting a separate budget for non-food items like detergent and toilet paper. Even though you can buy these at the grocery store, they tend to be high-ticket items that a small family does not need every shopping day. If you have a day when you need toilet paper, laundry detergent, bath soap, mosquito repellant and floor wax all at the same time, it can really be hard to buy food. You'll be tempted to go over-budget "just this once". If your schedule does not permit you to make a separate trip to shop for these non-food items, at least separate them in your cart and have the cashier ring them up as a different order. You can pay for them out of a different envelope of cash.

When shopping day comes, try not to go when you are tired or hungry. A tired shopper will lose track of how much he or she is spending, while a hungry one will want one of everything in the store. Even if you have to budget several dollars of your grocery money for the shopper to grab a fast food meal, it may save you money in the long run.

As you shop, keep track of what you are spending as you load the cart. If you are really poor at arithmetic or you really enjoy technology, you can use a calculator. (Most cell phones have a calculator function.) However, most people can learn to estimate accurately, with practice. This is my method: Round the price of each item to the nearest half-dollar and add to a running total that you keep repeating in your head. For example, if you have already spent about $15.50, you would repeat to yourself "fifteen and a half, fifteen and a half." When you put something in your cart for $2.42, you would round it to two and a half, for a total of eighteen. (When you are first getting used to this technique, you may want to shop at a store where no one knows you, because you may find yourself walking around saying out loud, "Eighteen. Eighteen. Eighteen.") If you notice that you've had to round up several items in a row, deliberately round the next few down, and vice versa. When in doubt, estimate high rather than low, because it's better to find that your actual total is lower than you thought than to find that you have gone over budget.

When selecting items, keep in mind that size does matter. A particular size (not always the biggest!) may be the cheapest per ounce, per serving, etc. Make sure that if you buy a lot, that you have the space to store it and that it will not become useless, such as by becoming stale, before you use it up. Food you throw away is not a bargain!

The same goes for different brands. Store brands and generics can be a great way of saving money, if your family likes the product. Don't be afraid to experiment with different brands, but try not to experiment on too many things in one shopping trip. If there is nothing familiar in your cart, then you will start to feel insecure and deprived. That's when most people break their budget, abandon their list, and go nuts.

The same goes for different stores. You may find good bargains by going to different stores, but don't stress yourself out over it if you can avoid it. Most stores have roughly the same prices on the majority of items, with a few big sellers that are higher and a few other big sellers that are lower than the competition for the same approximate profit margin. Depending on what particular products your family normally buys, it may or may not be worth your while to chase sales, or to get dairy products at one store and produce at another.

Good luck! I'm sure that in today's economy, many people are in the same boat--I mean, cart!
